Servogear powering innovative wind farm vessel

Ship owner Njord Offshore and the shipyard Penguin International LTD has chosen energy-efficient Servogear propellers to provide power and manoeuvrability for their latest offshore wind farm support vessel “Ventus Formosa”.

This is the world's first combined crew transfer and accomodation vessel for the offshore wind industry, built at the Penguin International LTD shipyard in Singapore. The 35 meter long vessel are designed by BMT will be operated by Njord Offshore. It is built to accommodate up to 24 engineers.

- We are happy that Njord Offshore and Penguin International once again choose proven, world leading, Norwegian propulsion technology from Servogear in their wind farm support vessels. These are boats that have very special demands and characteristics when it comes to power needs and bollard pull, says Servogear CEO, Torleif Stokke.

Servogear provide a complete controllable pitch propeller arrangement, including propeller blades, shaft, shaft brackets and effect rudders. The system is monitored and operated through a Brunvoll Mar-El control system. The propeller shafts and servo systems are mounted on ZF gearboxes.

- The contractors need vessels that can ensure safe, fast and cost-efficient transport of people and equipment to the offshore wind installations. Servogear has gained experience with the offshore wind farm sector through several decades and we have a long, proven track record for high-demand vessels like this, Stokke says.

The “Ventus Formosa” The vessels will be contracted by Siemens Gamesa, who is constructing the Formosa 1 offshore wind park on behalf of a joint venture of Orsted, JERA, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group and Swancor. Included in the deal is a 15 year service agreement. The Formosa 1 wind farm has a total of 128 MW installed capacity and is located to the north-west of Taiwan.
